Students Launch COVID-19 Educational Outreach On Vaccines At PCC

TAKE A BRIEF ANONYMOUS SURVEY RIGHT NOW ABOUT COVID-19 VACCINE

Timed to coincide with the upcoming vaccine clinics on Pima Community College campuses and prompted by lower vaccination rates among young people, students with PIRG Campus Action and the Arizona Public Interest Research Group (Arizona PIRG) Education Fund have escalated their campaign urging more students at PCC to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

As PCC and the Pima County Health Department partner to host free, no-appointment-needed vaccination clinics at the five campuses, the non-profit organizations are speaking in classrooms and with student leaders, distributing educational information, and encouraging members of the PCC community to get vaccinated.

Just under 50 percent of people aged 18-24 are fully vaccinated nationally, the lowest among age groups over 18. That’s concerning given the rapid spread of the highly contagious delta variant of the virus.

Since the initial launch of the educational effort, PIRG Campus Action and Arizona PIRG Education Fund have reached thousands of young adults at PCC and the University of Arizona with messages encouraging people to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

“The most notable takeaway from our outreach so far is how many students are eager to get vaccinated, but they just need a reminder and some help finding a site near them,” said Sydney Kale, Campus Organizer with PIRG Campus Action. “We’re speaking directly to students and encouraging people who have already gotten vaccinated to ask their friends to also get vaccinated. And if people have questions about the vaccines, we urge them to talk with their doctor to help make their decision based on reliable information.”

In addition to the upcoming on-campus vaccine clinics, residents of Pima County can learn more about COVID-19 and find a vaccination site at the Pima County Health Dept website. Arizona PIRG Education Fund compiled a list of FAQs they have been asked on college campuses and will be distributing the information on campuses throughout the semester.
