Congress Takes Big Steps Toward 21st Century Transportation in Stimulus

In a bold and far-sighted move, Congress added $9.3 billion in the American Reinvestment and Economic Recovery Act for development of high speed rail and other intercity rail. This amount was a large increase from the U.S. Senate version of the bill and came on top of $8.4 designated for other public transit agencies.

Today, the U.S. Senate and House passed the final version of the economic recovery package with an enormous increase to the Pell grant program. The Pell grant serves almost 7 million low income students who face obstacles staying in college and out of the unemployment line due to the economic climate.

Arizona PIRG will Monitor President Obama’s Bailout Plans

Without better oversight, the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) bank bailout program will continue to fail, according to a report from the Arizona Public Interest Research Group (Arizona PIRG).  According to Arizona PIRG, today’s expected TARP reform announcements from the Obama Administration will include major improvements in oversight and accountability that will also benefit from continued use of the new Arizona PIRG TARP report card for evaluation.
