U.S. Senate Legislation Would Undercut Critical State Food Safety Measures

Legislation considered in the U.S. Senate Health, Employment, Labor and Pension Committee today would abolish more than 150 state and local food safety and notification requirements. The National Uniformity for Food Act (S. 3128) would implement sweeping changes to America’s food safety net by severely restricting the role of state and local governments in ensuring food quality and providing information to consumers.

U.S. Senate Shuns Attempt to Weaken Food Safety Protections

In refusing to consider the National Uniformity for Food Act (S. 3128) before the end of the 109th Congress, the U.S. Senate rejected an attempt to weaken America’s food safety system. The bill, supported by powerful food manufacturers, would have implemented sweeping changes to America’s food safety system by preempting hundreds of state and local food safety protections.

Instead of protecting public health, the U.S. House of Representatives catered to powerful corporate interests today by passing H.R. 4167, the National Uniformity for Food Act.
