Today, the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) acted to save consumers and businesses money by unanimously approving a final Energy Efficiency Standard Rule.

Energy Policy Considerations for the Arizona Corporation Commission

The Arizona Corporation Commission was established in 1912 by the Arizona Constitution as a popularly elected body charged with regulating public utilities, corporate filings and securities, and railroad and pipeline safety. Sixteen electric utilities, seven natural gas utilities and more than 350 private water and sewer utilities fall under the purview of the Commission. This fall, Arizona voters will elect two commissioners to the Commission.

The Arizona PIRG Education Fund Offers Guide for Energy Policy as Arizonans Cast Votes for Arizona Corporation Commissioners

Today, the Arizona PIRG Education Fund released Energy Policy Consideration for the Arizona Corporation Commission, a briefing book highlighting energy issues arising in this year’s Arizona Corporation Commission election.  The Arizona Corporation Commission (Commission) is charged with regulating public utilities, corporate filings and securities, and railroad and pipeline safety.

Salt River Project (SRP) to Hold Meeting on Proposed Rate Case

Last fall, Salt River Project (SRP) agreed to postpone its proposed rate hike due to significant concerns about the size of the increase and SRP’s limited investments in energy efficiency and clean renewable energy.  Again, SRP customers and groups including the Arizona PIRG Education Fund are asking ratepayers to send SRP the message that it should focus more on increased energy efficiency and renewable energy and not on coal or other dirty energy sources.

Salt River Project (SRP) Holds Public Hearing on Rate Proposal

The Arizona PIRG Education Fund applauded SRP for their efforts to bring transparency and public participation to their ratemaking process but also urged SRP to significantly increase their commitment to energy efficiency.

Historic Votes By Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) Will Increase Energy Efficiency

Today, through votes ranging from approval of the Arizona Public Service (APS) rate case settlement agreement to formal initiation of an Energy Efficiency Standard, the Arizona Corporation Commission acted to save consumers and businesses money by ramping up energy efficiency in Arizona.

Salt River Project (SRP) Increases Energy Efficiency Programs But Still Lags Arizona Public Service (APS)

While Salt River Project (SRP), the second largest utility in Arizona, has elected to delay a major rate increase until at least May of next year, its board voted today to increase its commitment to energy efficiency and renewable programs via an Environmental Program Cost Adjustment Factor” (EPCAF).  While maintaining and increasing funding for these programs is critical, SRP is lagging its utility counterparts such as APS relative to energy savings.

Energy efficiency is the quickest, cheapest and cleanest way for Arizona to meet its growing energy needs. Although the magnitude of the economic situation in Arizona and across the nation is daunting, increasing energy efficiency offers an immediate, proven and important step consumers, businesses and government can take to save money, stimulate the local economy, create jobs and other services, and protect public health.
